About the Department

PG DEPARTMENT OF PUNJABI STUDIES: The Department of Punjabi is known all over the world for its pioneering and honorable achievements in the field of Punjabi academics. Department of Punjabi has glorious history, it is as old as the Khalsa College itself. The undergraduate level of Punjabi studies started when the Khalsa College was established (1892). Being established in 1949, it has the honour to be the first and pioneer department, concerning (with) the higher studies of Punjabi language, literature and culture. Department started M.Phil. in Punjabi in the year 2015-16. The systematic study of Punjabi literature was started by the first head of this department, Pro. Sant Singh Sekhon who has been ascribed the title of ‘Baba Bohar’ (the ancient Banyan Tree). The other renowned personalities who have served and contributed to this department are Pro. Sahib Singh, Dr. Taran Singh, Dr. Mohan Singh Diwana, Pro. Gulwant Singh, Pro. Gurbhachan Singh Talib, Pro. Roshan Lal Ahuja, Dr. Prem Parkash Singh, Dr. Tarlok Singh Kanwar, Pro. Diwan Singh, Pro. Karnail Singh Thind and Dr. Satinder Singh.The renowned scholars of Punjabi Language Pro.Pritam Singh, Pro. Kishan Singh, Pro. Kirpal Singh Kasel, Dr. Surjit Singh Sethi, Dr. Gurcharan Singh, Dr. Tarlochan Singh Bedi, Playwrite Gursharan Singh and Dr. Atamjit Singh were students of this Department.

The renowned Writers of Punjabi Bhai Veer Singh, Bhai Jodh Singh, Principal Teja Singh, S.Sujan Singh, Pro. Mohan Singh, S.Pritam Singh Safir, Dr.Ganda Singh, Surinder Singh Narula, Kulwant Singh Virk and Sukhpalvir Singh Hasrat were also associated with khalsa College and this Department. As a link of this historical contribution, since 2010 Amritsar Sahitya Utsav has been conducting a world-class program and the department has been publishing its half-yearly refereed research journal Samwad since January 2015, which is Proud to be included in the UGC-CARE list. Presently 22 highly qualified faculty members are serving in this department.

This department is continuously working in the field of academic, literary, research and dialogue. The department is creating a dialogue with the contemporary by carrying forward its great tradition of thought and is constantly making a valuable contribution to the development of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat while looking for future challenges and possibilities.
